Appearance Additional FAQs:

Our Irish Moss is Wild-harvested. It is straight from nature, and has only been minimally cleaned /processed. Unlike some companies, we never use chemicals to bleach the natural colors (hence, you may see a variety of colors, hues, spots, etc. in your bag of moss- it is not mold – it is the natural product straight from nature).  If you are using your moss before your expiration date, there will not be any presence of mold (as each bag contains a standard amount of sea salt to maintain the preservation of your product). Please see below varies reasons for color and appearance differences of your moss.

Appearance and Color Differences Support:

1. Dark Spots (grit): If you can wash it off, it is “grit” (a combination of sea debris, dirt and sand). Grit may appear stuck to a piece of moss, or it may be dislodged during shipment and is floating around in your bag. Rest assured, this is totally natural for wild-harvested moss and can be easily be cleaned off with a little water!
2. Dark Spots (hue): If it does not wash off and appears as single “splotches” of color, it is the actual pigment of the moss. Our Caribbean moss is mostly tannish, but moss may be red, white, green (means chlorophyl), or purplish brown.  Different pigments may appear just like with any other living thing (plants, people, etc.), and usually means that a certain part of the moss may have been exposed to more or less sunlight than another part.
3. Dark Spots (tetraspores): If it cannot be washed off, and the dark spots appear as many speckles (tiny or large) on the tips and / or on the entire piece of moss,  it is “tetraspores”. Moss is a living thing, and as such, it has it’s own reproductive system, classified under “red algae”. If it is harvested after reproduction, these dark spots will be visible on some pieces of moss. Sometimes tetraspores are flat, and sometimes they are bumpy to the touch. Some companies bleach their moss to get rid of this appearance, however, we do not do this, because using harsh chemicals can provide adverse effects to your health. If you’d like to learn more, here are some scholarly articles about moss reproduction and dark spots (tetraspores):

4. White powdery film on moss: if your moss has a white powdery film on it, it is dried mineral composites. Our moss has natural sea-salt added as a preservative, in addition, sea moss naturally contains over 92 minerals in it. As the moss dries out (some pieces may dry quicker than others), the mineral composites will be visible to the naked eye. It is a wild product and this film can easily be washed off with water.

5. Stringy pieces in moss: There may be thin, stringy-like pieces in your moss, these are micro seaweeds (extremely tiny bits of seaweed).

Please note, all of the 5 above characteristics are “cosmetic” and do not affect the integrity of our product. It is a wild product, which means that it will come with everything that nature has provided it with. Different colors attest to our integrity of providing our customers with genuine, wild harvested products.
